THE EARLY YEARS
Started in Sarnia Ontario by George Edward “Ed” Street back in 1949, “Ed Street Cartage” serviced local homes in Sarnia and Point Edward delivering coal into residents basements for cold winter days. Later the the company provided service to the burgeoning “Chemical Valley” companies throughout Sarnia, Corunna, and Point Edward, where the main terminal was set up for many years.
After Ed Street passed away the company passed through several hands and was eventually incorporated as “Street Cartage Limited” in 1973.
THE 90’S – CURRENT OWNERSHIP
Our story began when Cherie Johnson purchased the company in 1993. Cherie has her feet firmly planted in the trucking industry after working with her father to build the company name for many years. When she took the reins, she moved Street Cartage to a larger facility in Petrolia Ontario where she expanded the fleet from 5 trucks to the current complement of 15. It was at this time in the early 90’s that she decided to expand the company’s range, servicing from the Toronto area to Michigan and Ohio and several other nearby states. Heated service and transportation of Dangerous Goods was added to the roster to provide more diversified services to our customers.
THE 2000’S – MORE SERVICES AND SECURITY
By the 2000’s, there was further development; New 4 axle van trailers for hauling heavy freight. After 9/11 new security related programs were adopted: US Homeland Security’s FAST and C-TPAT programs in 2003; CBSA’s CSA and PIP programs in 2008. These programs included numerous upgrades in security including employee vetting, a fenced yard, and security cameras. Satellite Tracking was implemented so clients could be secure in the knowledge what we were watching the progress of their loads.
THE 2010’S AND TODAY
The 2010’s brought further changes; The addition of brand hew heated 5 axle SPIF compliant dry van trailers allow Street Cartage to carry heavier loads knowing that freight sensitive to the cold would be safe and secure. Also, Cherie received her WBE (Woman Owned Business) certification for company’s striving to support diversity in the trucking industry. Our in-house shop staff doubled in size to further improve maintenance and reduce down time. And paperless driver logs were implemented, saving drivers time and reducing their paperwork burden.
Today, our fully staffed terminal of behind the scenes movers and shakers include office support needed to process the mountains of documentation needed to facilitate our clients flow of goods across the border, along with a full staff of certified mechanics and apprentices keeping everything rolling.
Cherie has been operating Street Cartage longer than any previous owner – 30 years now and growing. While quality equipment and customer support is important in any trucking business, Cherie and her staff strive to provide the kind of service that makes us stand out above the rest.
